LISST-Logger

Submersible 2,000 m rated datalogger

The LISST-Logger is a fully submersible RS-232 datalogger rated to 2,000 m depth.

Logging up to 6 sensors simultaneously, the LISST-Logger is first and foremost designed to work with Sequoia’s LISST-Tau and LISST-OST instruments. It logs RS-232 output from up to two connected LISST-Tau’s or LISST-OST’s. Additionally, it will also log up to four analog sensors. The LISST-Logger will also work with other RS-232 output sensors that send signals at once when powered up.

Check the FAQs to confirm compatibility with your sensor.

Software is included but not needed for the LISST-Logger – one can simply connect to the sensor and program it via its terminal window.

FAQ

What does the LISST-Logger log?

The LISST-Logger logs RS-232 data printed to the serial port of the connected instrument. One serial sensor can be connected to each of the two serial sensor ports on the LISST-Logger.

The LISST-Logger can ALSO accept up to two analog sensors connected to each serial sensor port of the LISST-Logger.

Consult the two FAQs below to determine if your digital or analog sensor will work with the LISST-Logger.

Will the LISST-Logger work with my digital sensor?

Use the flowchart below to determine if your digital sensor will work with the LISST-Logger. Ask your sensor manufacturer if your sensor datasheet or manual does not provide clear answers to the questions in the flowchart.

Will the LISST-Logger work with my analog sensor?

The LISST-Logger is primarily designed to log digital data. When digital data is recorded, an auxiliary file is also created that includes a time stamp, power input voltage, and internal temperature and humidity, recorded at 1 Hz during the sampling window.

As an optional feature, two analog input channels are available on each sensor port. These analog inputs are recorded as 16-bit values at the same 1 Hz interval and are written to the auxiliary file along with the other status data. Each measurement is recorded as a new line of comma-separated values. No other analog sampling rates are supported. The supported input voltage range is 0–5 V with 16-bit resolution.

The LISST-Logger may be used with analog sensors alone or in combination with digital sensors. For example, a digital sensor may be connected to Port A while an analog sensor is connected to Port B. With custom Y-cabling, it is also possible to connect two digital sensors and up to four analog sensors. Analog inputs are logged only during the sampling window configured for the port to which they are connected.

Use the flowchart below to determine if your analog sensor will work with the LISST-Logger. Ask your sensor manufacturer if your sensor datasheet or manual does not provide clear answers to the questions in the flowchart.

Does the LISST-Logger provide power to the sensors?

No. You must provide an external power source, for example a submersible battery pack, that can power both the LISST-Logger and the connected sensors. Sequoia can provide these, ask us.

The LISST-Logger has a small coin cell to keep the date and time on its internal processor, but the coin cell cannot power anything else.

What Sequoia instruments require a datalogger?

The LISST-Tau and the LISST-OST require a LISST-Logger unless you integrate them into another system that provides power and logs their data. All other LISST and Hyper instruments from Sequoia have their own internal datalogger and do not require an external datalogger.

Note that the discontinued LISST-ABS and LISST-AOBS from Sequoia also require an external datalogger – if you need a submersible datalogger for your LISST-ABS or LISST-AOBS the LISST-Logger will work with both of these instruments too.

Can I rent the LISST-Logger?

No.

Can I control the voltage output to the connected sensors?

Only by controlling the input voltage to the logger itself. The LISST-Logger will accept any input voltage between 7V and 30V and will simply pass through this voltage UNREGULATED to ALL connected sensors.

If you need to provide a lower voltage to sensors, e.g., on connector A, then you will need to build a custom cable with a built-in regulator.

Do you supply cables to connect my sensors to the LISST-Logger?

Only if your sensors are LISST-Tau‘s, LISST-OST‘s, LISST-ABS‘s or LISST-AOBS‘s.

Otherwise we recommend that you contact a provider of custom cabling such as MacArtney (22 worldwide locations, worldwide workshops and worldwide cable and connector stock) or Ocean Innovations (US) to design and manufacture your custom cable.

Where do I find the LISST-Logger pinouts so I can make a custom cable?
