What are PiA Conferences?

PiA conferences bring together experts from Latin America, along with experts from other countries and regions. Topics of interest: dynamics, measurement, monitoring, and impact of particles in oceans, ports, coasts, rivers, lakes, streams, and sedimentation.

Who Should Attend

The meetings are of interest to students, academics, environmental officials, monitoring agencies, and consulting companies Broadly, topics of interest are:

  • Marine and hydrological sediment transport
  • River and Reservoir Sedimentation
  • Biological studies
  • Sediments in Dredging
  • Particle Measurement technologies
  • Optics/Acoustics and remote sensing of Particles.

Language of Conference:

Authors may submit Abstracts in English, Spanish or Portuguese for presentations. However, all Powerpoint slides must be in English.

When and Where

Particles in the Americas (PiA) 2021 will take place from 17-20 May 2021 at Universidad de Cusco, Peru. Conference will begin with short-courses during the first day, followed by an icebreaker in the evening.

Cusco is the site of the former Inca empire, and for this conference, a site of research in sediments. Situated at an altitude exceeding 3,300 m (11,000 ft.) it is a popular tourist destination and a gateway to attractions such as Machu Pichu, and Lake Titicaca.

Scientific Program and Invited Speakers

A day of Workshops and ice-breaker evening shall be followed by 3 days of presentations and field-visit.

17 May 2021: Training Workshops/Short Courses. [to be announced]

Evening: Ice-Breaker [Location:TBD]

18 May 2021: Opening Session, Invited Dignitary Remarks, Musical Interlude, Opening by Dr. Elisa Armijos of the Host Institution, and Scientific Sessions.

19 May 2021: Field visit and Instrumentation Demonstration; Conference Dinner (evening).

20 May 2021: Scientific Sessions. Closing ceremony.

Student Awards

A Best Paper award shall be given based on selection of a Committee. The award shall include a Certificate of Commendation and a check of US$200. Students are highly encouraged to present in English for uniformity of judgment by award committee.

Presentations and Posters

Authors whose Abstracts are accepted will be invited to present their research in 15 minutes, including time for questions. Audio-visual equipment will be available. A poster session may be organized if a large number of Abstracts are received. The organizing committee shall select papers for posters. Dimensions of poster boards will be provided.


Limited space will be available for up to 10 companies, universities, or institutional agencies interested in exhibiting their equipment, software, and services. Each Exhibitor will be given the opportunity to introduce their products to the full gathering in a 3 minute presentation. Abstracts may be submitted in any of the 3 conference languages – English, Spanish or Portuguese. Abstracts must be no more than one-page, clearly describing the object and results of the work. Please note that the acceptance of the Abstract depends on the clarity of the statement. Abstracts must have a title, names of authors, affiliation of authors, email of contact, followed by summary statement of scientific issue examined, and brief results including any figure with caption. Limit: 300 words (excluding title and names etc.).

Abstracts must be received by 19 December 2020. Acceptance notice will be sent by 31 December. Authors must pay the registration fee within 10 days after Abstract acceptance, else the Abstract may be rejected. Also, see below.

Professional:  US $125 if paid before 17 January 2021; $200 afterwards.

Students from all countries except Peru: US $ 25 if paid before 17 January 2021; $50 afterwards.

Students from Peru : $15 if paid before 17 January 2021; $25 afterwards.

Guests/spouses of attendees [covers field trip and conference dinner]: US $25 if paid before 17 January 2021; $50 afterwards..

Certificates of Attendance

All attendees shall be provided signed Certificates of Attendance which may be used at their institutions for claiming travel expenses.
