The LISST-VSF from Sequoia is the world’s first commercially available submersible instrument for measuring the volume scattering function (VSF) of water in situ with some polarization discrimination capability.

The LISST-VSF covers the angular range from 0.094 to 150 degrees.
The data are with 1-degree resolution in angle, so that the instrument is capable of seeing enhanced bubble scattering. Integration of the VSF provides an excellent estimate of beam scattering coefficient b.
The range 0.094 to 14.9 degrees is covered with Sequoia's standard ring detector optics as used in the LISST-100X. |

The larger angles, 14.9-150 degrees, are covered by a ‘roving eyeball’. This eyeball views scattering from a part of a beam at any instant. As it spins, it views scattering from different points (hence different angles) along the beam. The received light is split into its two polarization components and sensed by separate photomultipliers. This permits extraction of the particle scattering Mueller matrix elements P12 and a noisy estimate of P22. [The VSF is identical to P11]. |

The simplified schematic on left shows the rotating prism (in the eyeball) and the polarization separating prism, that separates the P and S polarizations.
A full measurement is performed in about 3 seconds. Polarization information is only covered over the 14.9-150 degree range, At smaller angles, scattered light maintains the original laser polarization closely.
The combined data from small and large angle sensors is stored in a common data file. Depth and temperature are recorded. The instrument is programmable and fully autonomous with external battery for power.
