The LISST-100X instrument is a multi-parameter system for in-situ observations of the particle size distribution. It also records the optical transmission, pressure and temperature as supporting measurements. Laser light scattering at 32 angles is the primary information that is recorded. This primary measurement is mathematically inverted to get the size distribution, and also scaled to obtain the Volume Scattering Function (VSF). The size distribution is presented as concentration (micro-l/l) in each of 32 log-spaced size bins and the VSF as scattering (m-1 sr-1).
The instrument is fully self-contained with battery and data-logger. At the heart of the instrument is a collimated laser diode and a
specially constructed annular ring detector. Programming is controlled by an included piece of Windows software, used to program the on-board Persistor data logger. Two size-ranges (corresponding to two different angle ranges) are available: 1.25-250 microns (Type-B) and 2.5-500microns (Type-C). Standard memory size is 128 MB, suitable for storing approximately 1,200,000 size distributions and VSF's. A special version, the LISST-Deep, is is available for deep-ocean environments, rated to a depth of 2500 m.
